Bottom line – always know that your food is safe to eat.
Foods that are safe to eat when clean and raw are generally safe to eat if clean and undercooked. Food that is not safe to eat when raw is unsafe to eat when undercooked.
Use the same food preparations as you would for any other type of cooking. Wash and peel vegetables. Use safe handling procedures for all meats.
For any recipe that includes and food that is unsafe to eat when raw, for example, beef stew, you MUST use a food thermometer.
I always err on the side of longer cooking, letting food internal temperatures go far above minimum “safe” level. Since this is covered cooking, none of my food has ever been dry or tough due to overcooking. Always moist and tender.
If the sun fails you… refrigerate and try again tomorrow or finish with another cooking method. Its going to happen. Weather forecasts are sometimes wrong and you will run out of sunshine. It happens to all of us. I finish using another cooking method or refrigerate and try again the next day. Do not leave partially cooked food unrefrigerated.
This is not a toy. Pots get very hot. Contents get very hot. Severe burns may result. Use the same cautions as you would with any portable cooking appliance. Keep Children and Animals away.
All outdoor cooking presents hazards. Hot barbecue and kids in swimsuits? Campfires? Turkey fryer with boiling oil – is someone storming the castle?
Fact: outdoor cooking presents hazards that are not present in a well controlled kitchen environment.
Unstable surfaces and high winds will tip anything, including barbecues, deep fryers, outdoor stoves and solar cookers.
Uncontrolled animals and children must be kept away from all outdoor cooking appliances.
Uncontrolled environment – including (from personal experience) flying umbrellas and soccer balls, will increase the risk of injury in ANY outdoor cooking situation, including solar.
The ALL SEASON SOLAR COOKER is a very light weight cooking appliance. For best stability, use it on the ground. The bottom of the cooker must be on a firm, level, surface. If you use a table, place a damp dishcloth or towel between the cooker and the table. This will greatly increase the traction bond between the smooth plastic of the cooker an the table. Most portable camp tables are unsteady. It is recommended that you not use this cooker on a portable camp table.
Use eye protection.
When using the ASSC, especially when loading, it is likely that you will experience bright flashes of sunlight from the reflective surfaces. This can be avoided by turning the cooker completely away from the sun while loading.
Watch the wind
An empty cooker will be easily blown over. A cooker with pots and food is much much harder to blow over.
In very strong winds, you may want to put some extra weight inside the cooker.
Check the flag in the below video. Then observe the flapping of the man’s shirt at ground level. Plenty of wind that day. Both cookers were loaded with food but no extra weight was necessary to keep them stable.
